My asym is good to about 140 degrees apparent. I suspect from looking at
sailmakers' websites you could have one cut that would get you another 10
or 20 degrees. That puts you close to what you can do with a symmetrical
and a pole.

BTW I have priced spinnaker socks. The cheapest are from North Sails
Direct. About 7.50 a foot vs. 12 for an ATN.

Nothing says Happy Valentines Day like a new sail!

Yes. All of the above. Some C&C 99's had poles, some have sprits. All the
J boats have sprits. The two closest boats I know of personally to yours
are Cal 40's. They have taken the handicap hit to have both types of
spinnakers and fly them from their regular spinnaker poles. The asyms
really are for reaching, as a regular spinnaker is still better for sailing
at deeper angles. When they fly the asyms for reaching (and getting higher
speeds that you would get with a regular spinnaker at the same angle) they
use the pole and keep it low.

We have a C&C115 who flies his asym from the pole as well.

Another local has a IMX40 and converted it to be able to fly an asym - he
does a lot of offshore races and decided that a sprit would be the best -
keeps the asym low and forward of the bow by about 10 feet - plus is able
to 'heat it up' for greater speed. They cut a hole in the bow and glassed
in a tube to hold the pole (and keep the water out of the V berth). Works
well.

I'll ask my neighbor with the Cal 40 where he puts his pole - low or on
deck or what. I know he uses his regular pole, but when we were racing him,
we weren't close enough to see how low the tack was.

 Joel,

That’s an excellent idea. Of those who have them for racing, are they
tacked to the bow, to a pole laid on deck, or a custom sprit?

Might be time to switch to an asym.
