I tried this single line approach last spring during a moment of contemplation
and "seemed like a good idea at the time" moment. The results were like this. A
10 mile down wind race with ever increasing winds. While enjoying the ride we
didn't notice how much the wind had come up. When we rounded the mark to come
back we realized that we were well beyond the sails we had set and attempted to
reef. I was excited to try out the new reefing setup and as one crew dropped
the sail another winched in the single line. There was far too much friction on
the cringle and all I achieved was pulling the tack down to the boom. The Leech
flogged uncontrollably and no amount of pulling would correct the problem. I
realized too late that the only solution would be re-stringing the reefing
lines and with the boat now bouncing wildly in 4 foot steep swells and a novice
crew looking very nervous and green, we just dropped the whole thing to the
deck, lashed it tight and puttered home with the iron genny.
I hate doing that because that little 1GM10 Yanmar is really underpowered
against 30 knots of headwind.
I may try again but this time ill put a block on the cringle.
Cheers
