Forego the hooks. If you don't have a cunningham, rig one and use it instead of the hooks. That's what we do on Touché.
Here's our drill. We have a mark on the main halyard. We ease the halyard until the mark is at the rope clutch. Mast man hooks the Cunningham in the cringle. The reef line runs from an eye strap up through the leach cringle down to a cheek block on the boom then forward to a Spinlock Powercleat on the boom. After hooking the Cunningham, the mast man snugs the reef line in the Powercleat. Halyard is tensioned. Done in under 1 minute with trained crew. Dennis C.
