>>Lazy jacks and slab reefing all done at the mast.<< This is what I use on Calypso. I am able to put in the 1st reef by myself in <5 minutes, <3 with someone on the mainsheet. I still have the original captive wire halyard winch on the main which normally makes it fast and easy to handle. 2nd reef takes a little longer, 3rd is not normally rigged unless the storm warnings are up.
I only use the lazy jacks when dousing the main. If you use sail ties to bind the loose main sail material up out of the way, use a bright red sail tie in the reef cringle to remind the crew to un-tie them all before removing the reef. A friend told me it will save on repair bills. Harken's web site has several diagrams on main sail reef systems and lazy jacks. The lazy jacks are only used when dropping the main. The rest of the time they are hooked under the rams horns. 2 stainless rings connected by a very short piece of webbing through the luff cringle; leech reefing line led aft around a cheek block and forward along the boom through a cam cleat. I've chartered boats with every conceivable reefing system. This is still the easiest, fastest and most effective way to reef your main.
