I replace my rudder when I bought my 1981 36. it was a condition of getting
insurance as the surveyor found some pitting in the rudder shaft where it
entered the rudder. I had a new one made by FinTech (I think that is the
name of the company) in Costa Mesa. It cost about $2500 and took about 4
weeks.

We did the job with the boat in the water.
Getting good access to the area around the rudder shaft is critical. In
hindsight, I should have removed even more stuff that was in the way rather
than trying to work around it (like hoses, fuel tank bed, ect).

Now that it is done, very happy with the results.
