So for that price it does chartplotter duties as well as depth. Sounds
liek a deal.

I am not sure what you are planning to use this for. However if it has
the wires to interface with your DSC VHF (to broadcast position in an
emergency) and if it is a robust unit then it may be a good buy

If you are planning to interface with other instrumernts in future then
you should be careful to plan your entire suite in advance and pick each
up as you can afford it. My boat is small and the chartplotter is
basically used just as a GPS. There is no nav station and no plan or
possibility for radar etc ... this makes my needs pretty simple. I like
to be able to zoom in on a mark on the chart to plot a course to a
waypoint, I like to be able to zoom in to check depths, etc.. and zoom
out for an overall picture. My most useful display is one that shows 6
datums in large font: COG, BRG, SOG, VMG, DIST, ETA ... If I were on a
much larger boat my needs would be a lot different and I would plan
accordingly as tehre would be times when a lot more features and
integration is necessary

So basically - if the features fit your needs then investigate the
robustness of the unit. A few years ago NAVMAN was selling a lot of
instruments in the lower price end of market. Similar pricing to
Raymarine ST40 series. Have heard a lot of problems with displays
failing and the instruments were eventually rebranded as Northstar I
believe. Message here is that a bit of digging and a buyer would have
klnow that in the same price range Raymarine ST40 were more robust

My 6 cents (I think I covered at least 3 topics)

Well, I'm really new to the whole boat electronics thing. I was
impressed by the old GPSmap 162 and Fishfinder 240 that came with the

As long as you won't be killing yourself over no NMEA 2000. (which I
don't have either)

IMHO if it requires holes or custom mounts, NEVER go just for price.

Okay I just got off the phone with the GPS store. He said "for the
price, it's fine unit" Add in the C-Map Max charts which are $180... it
sounds very inexpensive...

Yes, Si-Tex has been around for a while, but mostly in the inexpensive
radar and fishfinder side of things. Caveat emptor...

        Okay,

I found another 7" plotter. It isn't touch screen but is $640
with a C-Map Max charts right in the box!

That seems incredibly inexpensive from a company that has been
around a while.
