If you do get one and mount the dome on the mast make sure to put it high
enough so that you could still mount a spin pole vertical on the mast

well, thats a great question and yes it IS worth it!

Mounting the the radar dome has given me something to ponder. I've seen
them up the mast and on the transome. Up the mast seems preferable. What
are the options? I'd like to keep the cost down if at all possible.

I'm thinking I should pull the trigger. I don't think I'll get it any
chaeper than now for such a combo.

I do worry about mounting the unit to the pedestal as there are some
requirements to distance from the compass. My compass is right on top of
the pedestal.

If spending 10% of your boat's value gains you 10% + more sailing time and
100% more confidence in limited visibility then it is a good investment.

We have an older Raymarine radar/chartplotter combo on Calypso. During last
summer's trip around Vancouver Island the radar was used often. On the
south bound transit of the Straits of Juan de Fuca we were in fog using the
radar for 18 hours straight.

Give some consideration to how (and how much $$) to locate and mount a radar
antenna. I have used both a fixed pole on the stern (Calypso) and a Questus
self leveling mount (1980 C&C 36, on backstay). Both worked fine for PNW
cruising.
