I tried webttrack on Debian stable and ran into the same problem, looked
in to searches for why for a while. After being frustrated and saying
things should not be this way. Computers are not supposed to make things
more difficult, but easier, right?

On an impulse I did an:
aptitude search httrack
p httrack - Copy websites to your computer (Offline browser)
p httrack-doc Httrack website copier additional documentation
p libhttrack-dev - Httrack website copier includes and development
files
i A libhttrack2 - Httrack website copier library
i webhttrack - Copy websites to your computer, httrack with a Web
interface
i A webhttrack-common

So I installed httrack and it worked straight away:

httrack "http://yoursite.ca/"; -O "~/yourdirectory"

When it's done point your browser to: yourdirectory/index.html

Very cool
No GUI or web browser, just command line. But it works right now, and I
am good with that. Keep it simple works sometimes.
