I can get my hands dirty with Gentoo, LFS, etc. But I moved away from Gentoo because I decided I'd rather spend my time earning a living, rather than maintaining a desktop. So, the same would apply in the Slackware case. (this is not to say that Gentoo or Slack require a lot of maintenance, only that in my experience and how *I* use my computer maintenance was an issue)

I'm considering Linux Mint at the moment...

(btw, I first tried slack in 1994)

Slackware is fine, I used to run it on my laptop (I actually used to use
Slackware as a basis for my DAW since I used to have to manually compile
a bunch of stuff myself).

If you value your time you will stay away from Slackware. It was a good
learning experience, but ultimately it was a PITA to keep current. As a
production desktop, knowing you as I do, I would strongly encourage you
to look elsewhere, pretty much anywhere else, even Gentoo :) Of course
if this is a purely a learning exercise and you can handle the
management overhead, then go for it.

Yes there are utilities that behave similarly to apt/yast/yum, but there
is no constancy in the packages themselves. I know people who swear by
Slackware, maybe they are smarter than I am or have a higher pain
threshold. Either way, for anything more than a learning experience I
would recommend a different path.
