I've compiled Gnome against Fedora 11, and besides issues within Gnome
itself (that's a different rant), it was pretty painless. I'll be bold
and say that modern non-1337 distros (i.e. .deb and .rpm based) are
adequate for building non-repo software. That, and spending 2 hours
trying to f*** with settings just to play a DVD seems kind of 1998.
I'd suggest Fedora for Shawn (yeah, I'm biased). I've found it the right
balance of power and flexibility, with the least amount of futzing. Of
course, once CentOS 6 hits I'm going to stick with that until the next
major release (Cent 5 has a few cobwebs that keep me from using it
full-time).
