I would think about checking out something different, like Fedora or Cent. I think Aaron was using SuSe last time I talked to him so that is another option. Yast is a pretty decent utility for managing RPMs. RPMs have come a long way, but I still prefer the Debian way. Speaking of which a vanilla install of Debian might something interesting, especially on a laptop (Ubuntu does go out of their way to make the restricted drivers easy to install, Debian does not). The problem for me is that Ubuntu strikes about the right balance for me. It is similar to my older workstation install that was a a Debian Testing and Unstable mix, only the Ubuntu series are easier to manage. The big downside for me are the constant releases.
