Not my experience, but YMMV, and in any case not the deciding factor for me.

Well, I'd argue that it's more than cosmetic, which I take you to mean 
pejoratively. In fact I place an enormous value on this point, for what seems 
to me to be a slight cost (and the major one is manual management of resource 
lifetime, not deployment).

I guess we just differ in our assessment of 'necessary' and 'value' in this

I'm a big fan of simplicity. However there are two sayings that come to mind:
