I admit that I'm quite focused on "Postfix + Amavisd-new + ClamAV"
solution (I don't know details of milter and so on) so maybe I'm missing
something... But what do you mean by "I use clamd without amavis"?...
No amavis, no milter, only alone clamd? Maybe you use clamav-milter, but
you just didn't mention it...
I'm using postfix. For each mail received i run a shell script which does several test on the message (espacialy run bogofilter and clamav on it). I know that it's not the most effective way but for many reason I want to continue to do such thing.

I don't want to be misunderstood I really think the the job done on this soft is great.
I'm using a second AV (trend) on the next smtp gateway (we are very paranoid) and a norton AV on client host. I use both sophos and ClamAV on our FTP file server. ClamAV is alway the first updated when a new virus come; and it often catch viruses before other because of late in their update process. The ML is much more reactive than any of our commercial product.
