Yes,  They did.  I used them in the 90s.

We used them at work in 1995-97 for laptops to go out in the field
before most laptops had PCMCIA (we were still supporting 386 and 486
laptops at the time, very few of them were good enough to run Windows
95).

At home, I have a Zenith dual-"720K" 8088 laptop and I used to mostly
use it as a telnet "terminal" with DOS 3.3, Kermit, and the PE3 packet
driver.

I don't have source AFAIK.  I'm in favor of it, but I was unlikely to
be rebuilding DOS drivers at any time.
