I just checked to be sure. While the default is to look for USB devices, hw isn't in the list of drivers that 4.4 checks for. In other words, you do need to specify the driver but shouldn't need to specify the device. In another message you mentioned having tried the device serial:ttyUSB0. While one would expect that to work, it doesn't in this particular case.
