There are very few shorebirds in the region - some Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs at Miramichi Bay (between Southampton and Port Elgin), Killdeer and Semipalmated Plovers. The large amount of rain has overfilled many of the ponds and the west wind is pushing the water high on shore along Lake Huron.
There is one Great Egret left on Chantry Island (off Southampton) and its nest mate is dead - it doesn't look good for this nestling. All of the Great Blue Herons have left the island and there are only 100 or so Cormorants left. 420 Double-crested Cormorants were colour banded on Chantry this year - yellow bands with 3 black letters. Please report these birds directly to me. Also, if anyone sees Eastern Bluebirds with a single pale blue colour band on the right leg, they were banded in Bruce and Grey this year. The Cape Hurd docked at Southampton at lunchtime and none of the crew had observed any jaegers out on the lake since leaving Tobermory. They reported lots of gulls and some cormorants. Good birding, Cindy Cartwright Saugeen Shores -
