This morning there were approximately 45 Turkey Vultures lined up on all of the
fence posts down both sides of a farm lane. From a distance they looked like a
distinguished honour guard. Flocks of several thousand Starlings have been
swirling in unison over the fields and settling into the trees. Close to 100
Common Loons were observed along Georgian Bay between Dyer's Bay and Cabot
Head. Many warblers and flycatchers are migrating through the area.
Shorebirds are becoming more plentiful at Mirimachi Bay, Horseshoe Bay, the
Independent Lagoons (Port Elgin) and wet fields, etc. throughout the county.
Another birder noted that there were 4 Red-necked Phalaropes at the Wiarton
Sewage Lagoons earlier but they had moved on and could not be relocated. An
immature Bald Eagle is being observed frequently at Baie du Dore, near
Inverhuron. Common Nighthawks are migrating along the shoreline of Lake Huron.

Hi birders,
This has been a productive week in the lambton area. This morning I saw
what was probably a MEW GULL at the Pt Edward light house.
ID marks:

-2nd winter bird with worn plumage
-bill and legs dull olive-grey
-well rounded head with large dark eyes, SMALL RINGED BILL
-extensive smudgy brown on back of neck
-very long, entirely black primaries with a long primary projection
-about the same size as the surrounding ring-bills.

I have seen common mew gulls in europe but what disturbed me was that it had
extensive black on the wing tips in flight, suggesting california gull. 2
mew gulls were seen at this location last year.

I also bicked to Pinery prov. park and found 2 juv. PRAIRIE WARBLERS on the
cedar trail (beside the visitor's center). and found the following at
Kettle pt:
-5 juv. RUDDY TURNSTONES
-6 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS
-2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS
-2 juv. SANDERLINGS

If anyone could give me their comments on the mew ID it would be greatly
appreciated.

Locations: the Pinery is located on lakeshore/hwy 21 between sarnia and
grand bend.
Pt edward lighthouse is at the end of Fort st. off of victoria near the
bluewater bridge
To get to "pat's point" (kettle pt) turn off of lakeshore at the kettle pt
plaza and then turn left at London rd.

Good birding,
Tim Snieder
