THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 6:00 pm, SATURDAY APRIL 8, 2006

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Another good week in the Ottawa area, with migrants arriving and
moving through. The east continued to be productive for waterfowl
- at least 5 TUNDRA SWANS were still present along Milton Rd.
northeast of Carlsbad Springs on the 7th, and 2 Ross's Geese were
seen among a large flock of approx. 5000 - 7500 Snow Geese along
Concession 20 at Ste-Rose Rd. east of Casselman on the 5th.
Another large flock of Snow Geese was at Russell Rd. and Johnston
Rd. east of Bourget the same day. These birds may well have moved
on; there have been no further reports since this date. At least
2 SANDHILL CRANES were observed again in the fields on the west
side of Milton Rd. north of Perrault Rd. on the 6th, and a Snowy
Owl was again seen at Russell & Johnston Rds. on the 7th.

The fields and ponds southwest of Ottawa have also been productive
- the 1st local reports of a Pied-billed Grebe and a Double-
crested Cormorant were at the flooded area along the Jock River
south of the bridge at Twin Elm Rd. on the 8th, and a GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE has been quite faithful to this location since
the 2nd - it was seen again here among a flock of approx. 2000
Canada Geese on the morning of the 8th. The large pond on the east
side of Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd. had 13 spp. of waterfowl
including a pair of Redhead since the 5th. The 1st local report of
a Greater Yellowlegs also came from this location on the 2nd, and
an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was here on the 8th.

The Ottawa River is largely open now, with ice remaining only in
the shallow areas and large bays. Seven spp. of waterfowl were
seen above and below the Deschenes rapids on the 8th including
Wood Duck, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead and Hooded
Merganser. A Snowy Owl and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were also
seen on the ice of Dick Bell Park on the 2nd.

In other reports of local interest, an adult Red-shouldered Hawk
was at Riddell Dr. near March Valley Rd. on March 31st, a Wild
Turkey was seen in (of all places!) the scrubby field on the west
side of the Britannia Conservation Area on the 8th, the 1st local
sighting of a Belted Kingfisher came from the Canadian Museum of
Nature property on the 3rd. A singing Northern Mockingbird was
heard in a backyard on or near Nestow Dr. in Nepean on the 8th -
the bird was heard from the field area near the railway tracks
behind the property. Migrant songbirds continue to move through
with many reports from various locations of numbers of Golden-
crowned Kinglets, Eastern Phoebes, Fox Sparrows, White-throated
Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos. The 1st report of a Vesper Sparrow
was from the Moodie Dr. pond on the 8th, and a female White-winged
Crossbill continues to come to a feeder in Merrickville south of
Ottawa as of the 7th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
