It felt like spring today. Lake Huron is starting to break up and inland rivers and creeks have open areas. There are large flocks of American Robins, Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles and Horned Larks throughout the area. Northern Shrikes were present in 6 locations. Large numbers of deer and Wild Turkeys were roaming around.
Several Bald Eagles were observed on the Saugeen River and on Chantry Island (Southampton). A sub-adult Golden Eagle was observed off Bruce County Road 17 about a mile east of Port Elgin, moving briskly to the northeast. Large numbers of Red-tailed and Rough-legged Hawks (dark and light phases) were also hunting in area fields. A Snowy Owl has been located fairly consistently in the block bordered by Highway 21, Bruce County Road 11, Bruce Concession 12, and Sideroad 20 (North Bruce area). Also observed - Pileated, Downy, Hairy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers; American Kestrel, Northern Harrier, Cooper's Hawk; Bufflehead, Goldeneye and other typical winter ducks; American Tree Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Song Sparrow, American Goldfinch; Crows and Ravens; European Starlings with bright yellow bills. Good birding, Cindy Cartwright Saugeen Shores www.ontariohummingbirds.ca
