As a consolation we stopped at Grimsby lagoons on the way home and found the Eared Grebe and then tried for the Western Grebe at Bronte Harbour - we were unsuccessful but did find a nice Red-throated Loon and a Palm Warbler at the foot of West River Road beside Bronte Harbour. Beamer is located on the ridge directly above Ontario St., Grimsby, the lagoons are located by taking QEW Niagara to Fifty Road, turn north towards the lake and take the North Service road to Kelson Road, turn left. Take Kelson Road to the first road and turn right. The sewage lagoons are on the left. You can park at the large garage there on the west side and walk in or we parked at the laneway which runs up the left side. There is a bit of mud in there so boots are recommended. Please respect the no trespassing signs posted at the north lagoon. West River Road can be reached by exiting QEW at Bronte Rd and going south to the Lakeshore and then west to West River Rd. and then south. We were sitting on the dyke at the Old Cut field station of the Long Point Bird Observatory facing east. As the crane approached it's size grabbed our attenion, and it quickly revealed white upper and underparts, mostly white wings with black wing tips, and rusty colouring retained on the head, neck and upper wing coverts. The crane was observed flying west about 50m above the marsh until it was lost behind some trees further to the west. The bird was searched for until dark but was not refound. It's likely it could be anywhere in the Long Point marshes, Big Creek National Wildlife Area or the surrounding corn fields where Sandhill Cranes have been frequenting lately. While searching for the crane at the Big Creek National Wildlife Area a Short-eared Owl fly in from the Inner Bay and continued west over the marsh.
