Hi,

Today I noticed an odd thing.

Bacula was blocked waiting for a tape, but plenty of satisfactory tapes
were already in the changer. We had run update slots and mount earlier
in the day, though there was no device in the drive when the mount
command was issued. Both behaved norally.

Here's what happened.

Yesterday, we ran a differential backup to a tape. Today, that tape was
removed from the changer, but was still set Appendable. Three
never-before-used tapes were in the changer, had been labeled, and
showed up as InChanger and in the proper slot and with the proper status
in "list volumes".

So this should have worked fine. But instead I got a message asking me
to mount yesterday's volume on the storage device.

I did an update volume and set yesterday's volume to used... then it
said it was waiting for mount. I ran mount for the second time
(remember I had already done that earlier), and then the backups
started using one of the available volumes.

Now, according to the released Bacula manual on the website, in the
Automatic Volume Recycling, Recycling Algorithm (p. 303) of the PDF, the
very first thing considered when looking for a new Volume is:

"If the request is for an Autochanger device, look only for Volumes in
the Autochanger (i.e. with InChanger set and that have the correct
Storage device.)"

And that was met.

So why didn't Bacula use any of the empty Appendable tapes until I set
the status of yesterday's volume to used? And why did I have to run
mount a second time after doing that before the backup actually started?

Thanks,

-- John
