I'm guessing based on previous traffic on this list that this is
referring to the 4GB eMMC. A quick glance at sys/dev/sdmmc doesn't
immediately yield the source of the error, but I'm taking a closer look now.

I'm not sure what you mean by removing the SD card--if I remove it
before booting, whatever's on the internal memory boots; if I remove it
while it's active... well, that's where BSD is installed, so I just lose
my root disk.
