I've always played that you can do that, but you have to own up to it 
if you get called out. Cheating is allowed /to the extent that/ you 
can get caught. (Thus, hiding cards under the table on someone else's 
turn would be forbidden, because if anyone calls cheat then it won't 
be on you.)
