> tells me that perception of time is measured in bits per second. > Correct. The keyword is "perception". We only perceive time because we have a beating heart. We won't exit time through some fictional miracle but through non-biological skins that will become an option.
Since the learning rate goes to infinity at a singularity, that tells me > that a singularity seems infinitely far into the future. There is no > "after" a singularity. > Right! "Singularity" is a lazy term Vinge used to describe a phenomenon he didn't understand. Good coinage though, no one understands "post-singularity" because no one has had the privilege of living outside the boundary of time... yet. That's still a big number, like 10^81 human lifetimes at 10^9 bits of human > long term memory capacity. Still, there won't be a fast takeoff because > intelligence is not a point on a line. > Also planck time, can't go smaller than that on this side of space-time, right? You can't compare human and machine intelligence. Computers are a billion > times smarter in arithmetic and short term memory, but can never exceed > human level in a Turing test. Which definition do you want? How do you > think a singularity will happen? Why 2042? > Singularities happen all the time, we choose which ones are historically important. Another singularity was the mainstream adoption of personal computers. It wasn't a definite point in time, but you could argue we've moved past the age of personal computers now. That's what 2042 is, a point in time when AGI reaches mainstream adoption. Anyone will be able to look at any object, decipher Einstein-level discoveries about it, and deploy robots, code, etc., to manipulate it however they want. A platform shift. Our current way of life will look primitive in retro. We'll experience time and meaning on a whole new level, and our current words/ToEs won't be enough to describe it. ------------------------------------------ Artificial General Intelligence List: AGI Permalink: https://agi.topicbox.com/groups/agi/T72460285b911fa58-M35b8dcb2ed009f1defacd30a Delivery options: https://agi.topicbox.com/groups/agi/subscription
