I'm pretty sure that was the point of them singing it. It was supposed
to be creepy and cringey.

I did find it a little cringey in the movie Elf. Yes, the characters
were guileless, but they could have chosen a different song for Jovie
to sing in the shower. I suppose this is the movie where Will Ferrell
calls Peter Dinklage an Elf.
