There definitely is a different tone, it seems like FB attracts a different sort of people than a mailing list, in general (as do forums). A lot of the same people are on all three, but the most active ones tend to be different.
But my other problem with Facebook groups is that they seem to be mostly worthless unless you sit there and stare at FB all day. Of course that may be just because I don't know how to use FB, but on the other hand, I don't want to...
