I think it’s bad for the GDTs also if they just sit there conducting until you roll a truck. Depending on the amount of power they are dissipating. Like 1 amp with an arc voltage of 10 volts would be 10 watts. If on the other hand the POE shuts down and keeps cycling trying to come back up, the arc will go out and the GDT will reset to a non conducting state.
I read somewhere there are special GDTs with a mechanical shorting clip that kicks in if the GDT gets too hot. I don’t think Chuck uses those though. So, I created the CAT6 100% Gas Discharge Tube line of products to prevent these errors on Cambium. They fire a bit slower than a solid state surge suppressor but are very robust. As popular as they are, I presume people are starting to use them on everything. Personally I would use the GIGE line everywhere I could as it does offer better protection.
