let's make a deal. I will talk to Ampere about what is the right way to simulate their system. I have friends there. If we get enough people to get NIX running on a simulator, then I'll try to figure out how to get us some real hardware, which we could position at a friendly university -- anybody want to volunteer? We used to have a Plan 9 system at LBNL, back in the day, but all those people left. So we need a new friendly space.
Deal? This is hard work, and it's far more important to be persistent over a long time than to get excited, put out a huge effort, and then drop it. It's WAY more important to put in the "think time" to work out how it gets done than to write code. The amount of code is small. The details are tricky. Thinking and reading code matters much, much more than writing code. I've been down this road a lot. Just an hour or so a week, applied consistently over a period of months, can get us there. Our goal should be to have NIX working on a simulator by May. Believe it or not, that's just about the right amount of time. As to which kernel, I lean to 9front. It's the most actively developed one I know of just now.
