I am wondering, why I can’t do a “Copy as reference” of anything in
Section 2.4 of the attached document (would have liked to copy the whole
section).
--> General considerations:
* By default, “Copy as reference” is enabled only when you select an
element having an xml:id attribute, but my guess is that you already
know that.
* Inside an inclusion (read-only element having a blue/gray background),
use plain "Copy" rather than “Copy as reference”. (Rationale: it does
not make sense to copy a reference as a reference.)
More precisely,
- When the included element is selected as a whole, "Copy" will copy its
reference and not duplicate the included element.
- When something is selected inside the included element, "Copy" will
make a normal copy of the selection, that is, duplicate the selection.
* XMLmind XML Editor does not always behave as expected when the
document being edited is structurally invalid (red icon at the
bottom/left of the main window). In other words, please first fix your
document before attempting to add things to it.

However, the attached document is full of xi:include pointing to files
you didn't send us ("../../Standard%20Modules/..."). For this reason, I
don't see any "Section 2.4" in it.
Please send us a document, possibly comprising a set of .xml files,
allowing us to reproduce the problem you describe.
The “Edit / Reference / Copy as reference” is grey nomatter which
element I select in this document.
