It was meant to attract listeners middays and attract younger
listeners.  It probably never achieved its first goal because stations
that run music during the day are useless to NPR news-only listeners,
who won't come back just for one hour at a time.  I have no idea what
results were on the second count.

Agree, but if the criteria here were ratings and underwriting, I can't
imagine News and Notes was tremendously successful.  Still, it's hard
to fault the current staff.  The mistake was probably on NPR's part
from the moment Tavis Smiley left; I'm not sure this program ever
received the kind of top-tier attention necessary after that.

Juan Williams is terrible.
