sorry for multiple posting on this, but I do want to point out that
key in wiki success
is adoption by contributors. Beautiful markup is less important (and
probably won't be important
in the future at all)

MW is ahead in adoption of all other wiki engines by a manyfold
margin.
It's markup has even greater lead, since other engines support it too
(e.g. ScrewTurn, written in C#).

If web2py wiki supported widely recognized markup it would have easily
10-fold
gain in the rate of adoption (vs. being based on a lesser known
markup).

Such wiki would be especially successful if it seamlessly plugged
into an existing production MW database, or at least imported it
whole.
- it is probably not a small project to take on, but I hope someone
might
take this seriously.

As for the linguistic advantages of reST over MW markup - deficiencies
of MW, if there are any, could be compensated by better wysiwyg
tools with a much better impact.

markup only wiki's typically have < 1/100 ratio of writers/readers.
This limit is probably there because of the ratio of geeks to normal
people.
Regular folks won't learn any markup.

Evgeny.
