I have tried to set up gnome as the xserver for vnc as directed in the url
below, but all I get is "failed to connect to server"

If I try "xserver :0" I get the following message. "A VNC server is already
running as :0"

I can telnet to the port, and I have checked the XDMPC.

Everything seems to be working, but I still cannot connect to the machine.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Keep in mind, the difference between WinVNC (all M$Windows variants) and
Xvnc (all unix variants, including linux). WinVNC only allows 1 server per
machine, serving a copy of the console. Xvnc allows many servers per machine
but cannot serve a copy of the console!

THe setup at http://www.sourcecodecorner.com/articles/vnc/linux.asp gives a
login like on the console. If you have time, try that one.
