Keep in mind, the difference between WinVNC (all M$Windows variants) and Xvnc (all unix variants, including linux). WinVNC only allows 1 server per machine, serving a copy of the console. Xvnc allows many servers per machine but cannot serve a copy of the console! THe setup at http://www.sourcecodecorner.com/articles/vnc/linux.asp gives a login like on the console. If you have time, try that one.
