The big problems in updates you covered.

Seems interesting that ZoneAlarm chokes things down.  I suspect that is
then an issue for *all* sorts of things interacting with ZoneAlarm, so
it may be worth a driveby to their knowledgebase for ways to clean
things up.

There's another option you might try, too.  If he has multiple PCs on
his LAN, isn't he doing some kind of NAT? If so, you might be able to
ditch Zone Alarm if you have no other ports being forwarded to guard,
and then when he needs VNC support, start your viewer in listen mode and
have him connect his server to you.  I've never tried that method with
VNC, but it may be worth a shot.

Just for the record, I think the only value of most software firewalls
is that they convince you to get a hardware firewall... But then again,
everyone's budget doesn't run that way.
