i successfully used this way before.

setup up DUN(dial up networking) programs>>accessories>>communications>>dial
up networking

if it is already setup...run dial up server option...if i'm not wrong, it is
under the connections tab...configure it and enter a password and then a
small icon will appear on the bottom right hand side taskbar....

the pc will be waiting for a connection...

goto the other pc...use dial up networking and dial into that pc by dialing
into the telephone number...once connected...an ip address (the ip address
most probaly will be 192.168.55.1 and the other is 192.168.55.2-think i
remember correctly) will be given to both machines once they are link
up....run winipcfg and select ppp adapter to find out the ip address..

you do not have to connect to the internet or AOL at all.....

it sure works! try it!!
