Duh, I forgot, you may be absolutely right.  It seemed so obvious/natural to me that I 
forgot to mention.
You use the -fp flag to do it.

Here is the command line I use to start vnc.  You may have to put in inside a script 
since it may be too
long to input at command prompt (it's one long line, if it's broken it is on spaces) :

Xvnc :10 -geometry 1280x1024 -depth 24 -query localhost -desktop "$LOGNAME" -audit 0 
-rfbauth
"$HOME/.vnc/passwd" -rfbwait 120000 -fp
/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/misc,/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi,/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/,/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/,/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/F3bitmaps/

Of course substitute some of these parameters with your own.
