Well ya know, a simple 3 finger double tap once in a call will have voiceover "shut up" as long as you want. Or of course one could be too lazy to do that and push for more complicated coding that increases the possibility of resulting bugs. It takes more time to complain about voiceover reading when you don't want it to than it would to just not be too lazy to use your available commands to make it not do so.
