Personally, I consider them a violation of netiquette. Which is to say, if
you subscribe to a mailing list, you're not supposed to send these out of
office messages, and other bulk, to the list. It is a matter of personal
responsibility; if you do not know how to behave on a mailing list, then
you have no place being there.

And a properly configured OoO message should never make it to the mailing
list anyway, as 'bounces' should go to the envelope-from, and most
certainly not to the list address.

So, either people do not know how to behave on a mailing list, or their
mail system is broken. Take your pick. Both are grounds to kick someone
off a list.

And on a personal note, there is something severely megalomaniac
about sending OoO messages; I'm sure you're the hotshot at the office,
but personally I couldn't give hoot whether you're out of office.
