online update is what you did
offline update is when it reboots to install the updates

dnf update.  basically what I have been doing for years (once was yum update)....

Those windows users just could not understand taking time to figure out how to get things working again instead of 'just reboot already'...   :)

Usually the online update works fine, but occasionally it doesn't.
