Try cleaning the tree with mrproper (save your .config first) and using

make linux ARCH=um
(and make modules ARCH=um if you use modules)
for the build.
However, using such a old UML kernel is really not recommended, you can 
upgrade the UML kernel without upgrading the host kernel.
