@Will There's not much magic in IntelliJ either. Provided the debug configuration updates (classes and) resources on 'Update' action and/or frame deactivation, this works like a charm as well. :) Only worth noting that IntelliJ seems to update *all* resources from that module where the change occurred, so it may re-register several existing definitions, not just the one that was actually modified.
