I think it would help if in the existing Application Lens the Filter defaulted to visible rather than hidden. An inexperienced user can easily miss the fact that the filter is even available, and even if he notices the Filter Results link he may well not realise that this will allow selection by category. If it defaulted to visible then at least he would know it was there. Currently the visible/invisible state does not persist over logout, which I suggest would be a useful feature.
