Okay I followed the above suggestion, I installed the latest drivers
from ATI (10.10), I was using the version from the package manager
(Catalyst control center didn't work via this) because when I first
tried (with 10.9) it didn't support Maverick...  I did a:

sudo apt-get remove fglrx

Before installing the proprietary drivers.

I've now got Powerplay setup as suggested above, I'll see what happens
now.  I use an AT&T 3G USB fob.  The laptop "does not" lock up when it's
inserted, nor does it lock up when the camera is on - So must be a
slightly different variation of the problem.
