Hello, Alan. OK, thanks for reminding me about tasksel :-) I have used it before, from the command line and via Synaptic "Mark Packages by Task", but I stopped using it because it installed things I didn't want and it still appears to install deprecated packages. > A bog difference between the server and desktop distros is the lack of a > gui in the server. Quite right, but if your server is supporting GDM logins you need the GUI and 'desktop' packages. There are, of course, lots of different types of server. In my case, they are used for interactive logins as well as providing LAMP + NFS, in an openMosix cluster. > Which is no bad thing IMHO. However, I much prefer to use the GUI for admin tasks. I think the X11 memory footprint is much less of an issue these days and if the GUI is running you can use it for admin tasks too. > Ideally your server should only be running the services you want to > serve and nothing more. True, but if one of the services you want to provide is GUI logins then you need the desktop installed. I mainly work with an NX client on my laptop and connect to one of our servers running FreeNX. > The kernel is built differently and IIUC uses a different scheduler more > appropriate for the tasks it needs to support. I know, and that's why I install "linux-server", after installing from the desktop CD. At one point, Canonical were considering standardising on the desktop CD for installations and dropping the other CD's but I've not seen much evidence of that recently. Maybe it's because 'corporate' IT departments like to do it the hard way ;-) > The Landscape management client application is installed by default in > the more recent server editions. Hmm... don't know about that! I'm using LTS versions only - Is it part of 8.04 LTS?
