See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Isles_%28terminology%29 but briefly: GB (Geographical) is largest island of the British Isles archipelago, Ireland is the second largest. GB (Political) is England, Wales, and Scotland. So GB never includes Northern Ireland although that is part of the UK.
