As a first stab at the question, I think the best thing would be to set up and online survey using survey monkey (http://www.surveymonkey.com/) or another similar product. We use survey monkey for simple quick and dirty polls and it has easy reporting functions. Philosophically we might get in trouble for using a "non-free" solution, but we could have results right away. We could publicise the survey on the Fridge, the forums and the mailing lists to push up n. I would imagine n=500 wouldn't be hard to achieve in a few days. My company has an account with them, so we can cover the cost, though if n exceeds 1,000 it's 50c a response!

It might make sense to widen the survey slightly to test more than just "magazine" and get more general usage and attitudes.

Thoughts?
