As a first stab at the question, I think the best thing would be to
set up and online survey using survey monkey
(http://www.surveymonkey.com/) or another similar product. We use
survey monkey for simple quick and dirty polls and it has easy
reporting functions. Philosophically we might get in trouble for using
a "non-free" solution, but we could have results right away. We could
publicise the survey on the Fridge, the forums and the mailing lists
to push up n. I would imagine n=500 wouldn't be hard to achieve in a
few days. My company has an account with them, so we can cover the
cost, though if n exceeds 1,000 it's 50c a response!
It might make sense to widen the survey slightly to test more than
just "magazine" and get more general usage and attitudes.
