Great suggestion, Robie and good discussion and opinions here. I'm +1 as well for moving (even if I also struggle with Matrix a bit here and there, esp. in regard to notifications, but anyway, I'll get used to it).
But I think that keeping the split between devel and release would make sense (but I could also live with a merge).
