Run the following: sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash
Take a look at /etc/usplash.conf and see if the resolution numbers in there are crazy big (or small). In mine except for a commented line that begins with '#' the entire file is the following: xres=1280 yres=1024 Hope that fixes it.
