psl : Thanks for your comment. Can you say what is the resolution of your screen when you are under X (Gnome), you can know this by going to your menu System / Administration / Screens and Graphics.
If the resolution from Screens and Graphics is not the same as what you see in /etc/usplash.conf, can you change the values in /etc/usplash.conf to be the same, run "sudo update-initramfs -u" inside a terminal without the quotes " and reboot to see if something changed?
